Lack of Progress on Equality for Women

4 May, 2007

Sinn Féin spokesperson on women Jennifer McCann MLA has expressed concern that the findings of a recent research report carried out by University of Ulster and YouthAction clearly shows that women are still waiting for equality.

Ms McCann said:

"It is clear from the findings of this recent report that despite all the strategies and policies adopted by government to promote gender equality, extensive discrimination against women in all areas of life still exists.

"Bearing in mind the great contribution women bring to the development of society it is incumbent on all agencies to ensure that all possible mechanisms for advancing gender equality are used rigorously.

"An Ireland of equals can only be achieved in the context of full equality for women. Sinn Fein will be calling on the office of OFMDFM to develop and fund a comprehensive Strategy for Women's equality linked to the 26 counties plan for women that meets the requirements of the International Convention of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)."
