Anderson welcomes investment in Magee

9 May, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed the announced £20million investment in the Magee Campus.

Martina Anderson said:

"This is a very welcome investment and once more highlights the potential for the development of facilities at the Derry campus. The establishment of this Research Centre at Magee along with the proposed location of a Medical School here also, augurs well for the future growth of the University.

"I believe that if we are to regenerate the North-West economy then the foundation should be bedded in the emerging high growth industries such as Information Computer Technologies, Medical Research and alternative energy development.

"Attracting intellectual property developers is essential in creating and maintaining real and sustainable economic growth. This investment will assist in that process. That is why Sinn Féin has long been on record calling for just this type of investment in the University of Ulster Magee campus. In fact I would go further and call for Magee to be given stand alone independent University status so that it could attract its own funding and investment instead of depending on the gratuity of the University of Ulster.

"I would encourage the new Executive - in conjunction with the Irish government to co-operate by investing in the whole area of research and development (R&D) at Magee to make it an area of excellence in this field for the whole of Ireland." ENDS
