Ferris was under the limit

10 May, 2007

North Kerry Sinn Féin TD and general election candidate Martin Ferris has said that he is relieved that the results from his urine sample have come back negative. Deputy Ferris said he was confident at the time that he was under the limit and he had now been vindicated. However, he also said that if he found himself in that position again that he would not get behind the wheel of his car.

He said:

"Obviously I am greatly relieved that the results of my urine test have shown that I was under the limit when I was stopped by Gardaí in Ardfert. In a statement following my arrest I said I was confident that I was under the limit and that I would never have gotten into my car if I thought there was any chance I was over the limit. That position has now been vindicated. However, I still regret what happened and if I was in that position again tomorrow I would not get behind the wheel of my car.

"I now want to get on with my campaign for re-election as I have been doing since the episode and I want to thank the many people all over north Kerry who gave me support over the last 2 weeks. I also hope that this reassures anybody out there who may have been apprehensive about the outcome of the urine test and I ask them to put their faith in me to continue my hard work for the people of North Kerry on May 24th.
