New EU Climate Change Committee

11 May, 2007

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said she looks forward to working with the new Temporary Committee on climate Change established by the European Parliament. Ms de Brún is to be a substitute member of this committee.

Ms de Brún said:

"Setting more ambitious targets will require major changes to our transport systems and to the manufacturing process; a commitment to alter the way in which energy is generated and a change to our collective lifestyles.

"Many of the suggestions for creating a more environmentally friendly society are obvious. We need to invest in public transport systems that use clean fuel, to invest properly in actively promoting renewable energy and to move away from excessive consumption and towards a more sustainable development.

"The discussions regarding climate change must be matched with actions, ambitious targets and permanent monitoring systems. The EU has a vital role to play." Ends
