Reckless auction politics are increasing public cynicism

14 May, 2007

Sinn Féin Dublin Central candidate Mary Lou McDonald MEP has criticised the establishment parties for engaging in deeply reckless auction politics and said that all it is doing is increasing public cynicism.

Ms. McDonald said: "Over the last few weeks we have seen the establishment parties trying to outdo each other in engaging in the most reckless type of auction politics. Each and every one of them has promised massive tax cuts along with increased and improved public services. This simply does not add up no matter what way you look at it.

"Sinn Féin's position on all of this is clear. We are not going to slash the finance available to the government. We are going to ensure that this money is spent wisely and in the public interest. Our priority is to continue to build a strong and vibrant economy so that we can provide strong public services and social protections. We will prioritise investment to open the 3,000 acute hospital beds which are urgently required, the building of 14,000 social housing units a year and a reduction in class sizes for under 9s. We will also ease the burden on those on low and medium incomes and close down the loop holes that have allowed multi millionaires to avoid paying any tax at all.

"Reckless auction politics do nothing but increase public cynicism. The electorate deserves an honest debate on all of these issues and it is well past time it started." ENDS
