Francie Brolly MLA seeks answers from Culture Minister

21 May, 2007

Sinn Féin's Irish Language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA, has asked to the Minister for Culture Arts and Leisure to investigate why his department is preventing Foras na Gaeilge, the cross border language body from providing capital expenditure funding assistance to Irish language groups in the community?

Mr Brolly said,

"At present, the only Irish language service provider for South and East Belfast, An Droichead, is attempting to improve the community and economic infrastructure through the provision of extra cultural facilities, but are prohibited from doing so by this unfair restraint on the development of the Irish language sector."

"This cross community centre, which employs 18 staff should be encouraged to develop as it won a prestigious Glór na nGael award last year as it provides a 1st class service for all." ENDS
