Sectarianism should not be a factor in school closures

23 May, 2007

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that the fact that a Ballymena Primary School has had to close because of sectarianism in the area is an indictment on society.

Mr McKay said:

"Everyone knows the problems that Ballymena has in regard to sectarianism, both past and present, but the fact that this has spilled over into attacks on primary schools and indeed churches is a true indictment on society.

"There remains an onus on all political parties in North Antrim to use their influence to combat sectarianism within the community. If sectarianism is not tackled with the urgency that is required then the reality is that these kind of attacks will continue to take place.

"Given the political dispensation that we are now in there has never been an opportunity like there is now for all elected representatives to use their leadership to challenge sectarianism within their community, and lets face it such leadership is needed in North Antrim." ENDS
