Animal Carcasses dumped in open

29 May, 2007

Sinn Féin Slieve Gullion Councillor, Anthony Flynn, has said that the sight of dead carcasses of cows, sheep and horses, strewn over an area beside Ballintemple Scenic Point on Slieve Gullion Mountain had caused many to be physically sick.

Cllr Flynn said:

"There are stinking carcasses as well heads and other limb parts of different animals. It is a sickening sight in what is deemed an area of outstanding natural beauty.

"There also is a suspected dumping of asbestos type material in the area.

"Anyone who has dumped such vile and potentially poisonous materials is selfish and cares little about the local community.

"I will be asking Newry and Mourne Environmental Health Officers along with Environmental Heritage Staff (EHS) to ensure that all carcasses and materials are removed and the area left safe. It is also essential that they try to identify the culprits involved in this disgraceful act of illegal dumping" ENDS
