Anger as Raw Sewerage floods into Lower Ormeau Road – again

3 June, 2007

Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has said he is absolutely disgusted after Raw Sewerage flooded in the Lower Ormeau Road area.

Raw sewerage flooded into the Lower Ormeau Road, River Terrace, Cook Street, Cook Place and Shaftsbury Avenue following forecast heavy rains over the weekend.

Mr Maskey said:

"Despite repeated assurances that there had been improvements in the sewerage infrastructure we have yet again seen raw sewerage flood onto the streets in this part of South Belfast.

"There were forecasts of heavy rains this weekend yet it appears that there has been a breakdown in whatever pre-emptive measures were supposed to have been put in place to avoid raw sewerage flooding into the area.

"Water Service has some serious questions to answer. Did they put in place appropriate measures to avoid the flooding of raw sewerage into the area given that there was heavy rains forecast? Was there a breakdown in the pump infrastructure; and why were no senior water service management on the ground?

"Cleaning is now under way and at the minute there does not appear to be any more build up of water.

"However there is widespread anger in the area and I believe that people living here are being treated with utter contempt." ENDS
