A strong voice for older people

5 June, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Fra McCann speaking in Stormont today has said that they is widespread support for a Commissioner for Older people and called for a range of measures including a commissioner and age proofing of departmental decsions.

Mr McCann said:

"How many times have we said to ourselves, if we had the power we would work to ensure a strong voice for older people?

"We have an opportunity to take that step today and send out a message that every party stands for better protection for those who we owe our very existence to; those who nurtured us. How many times have we witnessed older people being ignored or abused by those who should know better and said nothing?

"Lets agree that this would be better served by the establishing of an commissioner for older people. Lets look at stronger legislation to tackle the many inequalities faced by older people. Lets look at an all party working group, time bound to bring back a series of recommendations to deal with these problems and lets look at the various departments under our jurisdiction and see if they stand the test of age proofing."
