Sinn Féin welcomes OFCOM’s review of Communications Industry

6 June, 2007

Sinn Féin Economy spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has welcomed the announcement by OFCOM of an industry wide review of charges imposed by providers of landlines, mobiles, broadband and pay TV.

Mitchel McLaughlin said:

"I welcome this review and hope that it is both vigorous and far reaching ensuring that there is value for money and that there are no hidden charges in consumers bills.

"I congratulate the Consumer Council for once again raising customer concerns about the often exorbitant rates being charged for what can only be described as less than customer friendly services. In the past I have highlighted the unacceptable practice of service providers surcharging consumers who choose to pay by cash or check.

"I would encourage all community and Consumer Advice organisations to participate in the proposed review and ensure that the most vulnerable in society's interests are protected.

"In this review OFCOM must also ensure that the cost to Mobile operators as a result of the recent decision by the EU on roaming charges is not passed on to consumers through increased domestic charges." ENDS
