Kelly welcomes Launch of Suicide Awareness DVD

7 June, 2007

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly has said that he hopes the launch of a new DVD by suicide and self-harm awareness group PIPS helps stimulate debate on the issue.

The DVD 'Suicide Everybody's Business' is being launched 10am this morning at Belfast Castle.

Mr Kelly MLA said:

"I welcome the launch today of the DVD as an important step in lifting the stigma of suicide, especially amongst young men. The recent increase of the rate of suicide is of massive concern to everybody.

"We would hope that this DVD will help to stimulate debate about the issues and encourage those most affected to talk about their problems.

"The wonderful work done by PIPS and other community groups - coming from the community and working with the community - has bridged a gap and integrated a strategy with statutory bodies.

"We welcome the extra resources that have been targeted into the communities most affected however the question has to be asked; what price a human life?

"Surely the recent increase highlights the resources required and the massive under-funding of mental health services places great stress on those who are tasked to provide services such as counselling and leads to totally unacceptable waiting times for those in acute need.

"So, when groups such as PIPS signpost people to statutory help it needs to be there, properly funded and accessible.

"I welcome groups such as PIPS that are developing state of the art plans for Belfast and wider afield in tackling the issue of suicide and self harm." ENDS
