Public Concerns over Inter Connector Health Risks have to be addressed

7 June, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan speaking after attending the Public Meeting in Armagh last night to discuss concerns relating to the proposed north-south electricity inter-connector, has said that the are major issues of concern which have to be addressed.

Mr Boylan said:

"There is a genuine concern from people and communities about particularly about the Health implications that this inter-connector poses.

"People have a right to have these fears listened to.

"Both myself and the local MP Conor Murphy will be meeting with senior NIE officials in the coming days to discuss the proposed project.

"Practical questions were posed last night at the meeting, such as could the inter-connector be positioned under ground instead of overhead.

"These questions need to be answered, and we will be encouraging NIE to engage with communities in a constructive manner.

"There is an acceptance by people that the project should be of benefit to the broader community in general, but those people directly affected by the proposals must be respected and have these issues listened to." ENDS
