Sinn Féin meet NIE over Electricity Inter Connector Health Concerns – Questions about public Consultation Process

11 June, 2007

Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan today, Monday 11th June, met today with senior representatives of NIE to discuss concerns raised by many residents who will be affected by the new Inter Connector proposals.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Boylan said:

"This basically was a preliminary meeting to discuss at first hand issues of concern and to gauge where NIE were in responding to those issues."

Cathal Boylan confirmed that NIE Officials that they were presently involved in consultations with the farming industry. He added:

"NIE will be meeting farmers from the Derrynoose area next Monday (June 18).

"When I pressed them about widening out the consultation process, I was informed that the public consultation will commence after this initial one with farmers. However, I have serious reservations the inclusiveness of the public consultation as NIE have proposed to invite only residents living within 750 metres of the preferred route.

"NIE should reflect on placing those types of restrictions on the public consultation. They should realise that the proposed Inter Connector route impacts on a huge amount of individuals and communities. Questions in particular about Health and the feasibility of putting cable underground need to be answered very publicly and before as many interested residents and communities as possible." ENDS
