Water Review Welcomed

11 June, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the decision today by the Minister of Regional Development Conor Murphy to implement an independent review of the water and sewage services.

Mr McCartney said,

"The statement today by Conor Murphy Minister of Regional Development that an independent would be set up to report back on the future funding of water and sewage services for the North is to be welcomed.

"The review will have two strands. The first strand focuses on the fundamental issues of financing these essential services and should report by Autumn 2007. This will enable budgetary arrangements to be agreed. The second strand will concentrate on wider aspects of arrangements for water and sewerage and should report by December 2007.

"I am happy that the Minister has ruled out privatisation as a means of providing this utility to the public as we have seen the cost of private ownership of water on the public in England and Wales.

"Sinn Féin is committed to scrapping the water charges and I am happy that this review will be wide ranging and can provide alternatives to the water charges imposed by the British Government that has been put off for a year." ENDS
