Anderson highlights 'Refugee Week'

13 June, 2007

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Human Rights and Equality, Martina Anderson has welcomed the news that the plight of refugees and asylum seekers shall be highlighted through next week's "Refugee Week" in the six counties.

She said,

"People who have fled to Ireland have made a positive impact to our country and their needs must be addressed. Those who have fled here to escape persecution have rights and Sinn Féin has worked tirelessly to protect their liberties.

Yesterday, myself and Martin Mc Guinness met with Lordorice Djountsu and her daughter who have settled in Belfast after fleeing from persecution from Cameroon. Her case is an example of the need to bring the rights of asylum seekers and refugees to the fore in our society.

Next week I shall be meeting Fidelma O'Hagan, Immigration Advisor for the Law Council and Sinn Féin will continue to fight on behalf of those in society who have sought help in our country. We are wholly committed to the rights for all our people including those who have sought refuge with us." Deireadh/Ends
