Culture Minister challenged to support Féile an Phobail

14 June, 2007

Paul Maskey, MLA and Sinn Féin member of the Assembly Culture, Arts and Leisure Department has written to the Culture Minister Edwin Poots and asked for a priority response regarding how his department is providing stable growth to festivals such as Féile an Phobail.

He said,

"Féile an Phobail (Ireland's largest community festival and a Belfast's festival with the biggest audience participation) is now in its 19th year as a positive and vibrant addition to Belfast. Due to funding restraints the Féile now finds itself with a problem. Feile an Phobail has in the past been Belfast's biggest festival. This festival must remain adequately funded and remain available to all the people of Belfast, Ireland, Europe and beyond."

"I have demanded that the minister look into the issue of community festivals and how DCAL deals with them as a matter of urgency. Sinn Féin believes that by working towards an ambitious cultural and leisure programme the benefits will be for all." Ends/ Deireadh
