de Brún to chair major conference on climate change

14 June, 2007

Sinn Féin's Bairbre de Brún MEP will today chair a major conference in the European Parliament in Brussels on tackling climate change. The conference, which focuses on climate change and its impact on developing countries, has attendance from MEPs from across Europe as well as environmental NGOs and the general public.

Ms de Brún who was recently chosen to sit on the parliament's new prestigious Committee on Climate Change chairs the conference in which experts from China, Africa and Bangladesh explore the threat of climate change in their regions and countries and debate recommendations for action with European colleagues. The experts are themselves represented on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the World Conservation Union.

Speaking today Ms de Brún Said:

"Climate change is a truly global issue in which the EU can play a vital role. Following widespread disappointment at the lack of action coming out of the recent G8 summit, it is important that international actors press for a more farsighted response and the specific questions relating to developing countries are taken into account.

"As a member of the European Parliament's Environment Committee and Temporary committee on Climate Change, I am delighted to chair such an important conference which looks at not only the geographical but also the social impact of climate change." ENDS
