Ballymurphy attacks must end

17 June, 2007

Sinn Fein Councillor Marie Cush today called for action to end the litany of attacks on homes in the Ballymurphy area. Her comments came after a home in Ballymurphy was petrol bombed on Friday night.

Cllr Cush said:

"I condemn the petrol bomb attack on a home in Ballymurphy on Friday evening. People who know anything about that incident should go directly to the PSNI. The perpetrators need to be brought before the courts.

"This is just the latest in a litany of attacks on people and property in Ballymurphy and neighbouring districts. The victims in this serial violence are the 670 families who want to live in Ballymurphy in peace and safety, free from violence and intimidation."

"Those who are causing harm and crime in Ballymurphy; those who are giving them refuge; and those, especially the PSNI, who are letting harm and crime be done, must all be held to account. The people of Ballymurphy are entitled to an accountable and effective civic policing service."

"Last Thursday night, the people of Ballymurphy came out in a mass, peaceful protest to demand our rights. We will not be terrorised from our own streets and our own homes. Sinn Féin and the local community are determined to reclaim and rebuild Ballymurphy." ENDS
