Sinn Féin meet Parades Commission over Whiterock Parade

20 June, 2007

A Sinn Féin delegation led by West Belfast assembly member Paul Maskey and local councillor Tom Hartley today met with the Parades Commission at their Belfast Headquarters to discuss this weekends Whiterock Parade.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Maskey said:

"Once again this weekend the Orange Order is seeking to have the Peaceline at Workmans Avenue opened to facilitate an unwanted and unwarranted parade through the local nationalist community. We have seen in previous years the link between this parade and unionist paramilitaries and have witnessed widespread violence and intimidation.

"The local nationalist community who actually live on the Springfield Road do not want this parade going through their community. They do not want the massive PSNI presence and the associated hassle which descends on their area annually.

"The Parades Commission continually claims to be playing a positive role in resolving contentious parades yet they have failed to make contact with local residents or local political representatives in West Belfast since last June. I told the Commission today that this is no way in which to seek an acceptable resolution." ENDS
