SF welcome new Welsh language daily newspaper

20 June, 2007

Sinn Féin's Irish language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA has welcomed the news that the
first national daily newspaper in the Welsh language will be launched next year.

Y Byd (The World) will be published on the first Monday of March says the company behind it, Dyddiol Cyf.

Mr Brolly said,
"The news that a Welsh language national newspaper is to be established in Wales for the first time highlights the increasing demand for minority language resourses and facilities and this move has positive implications for Ireland.

Our own Lá Nua, the Irish language daily, based in Belfast, is a shining example of a minority language daily. Broadcasting and the print media must be included into any legislation on the Irish language in the six counties and Sinn Féin has demanded this in their submission to the Dept of Culture consultation on the langauge.

"Wales has a language Act enshrined into their legislation and this should also occur in the North of Ireland forthwith. Cuirimsa fáilte
roimh an chéad nuachtán laethúil seo sa Breatain Bheag. I welcome this initiative and encourage more growth in the minority language media sector.
