O'Neill backs greater provisions for early years childcare

27 June, 2007

Speaking yesterday in the assembly she said,

"Early childhood development is the foundation to lifelong learning and helps to provide a fair start in life for all children. We must ensure that they are given the best possible support by those involved in their development and in order to do that we must ensure that those who carry out this important role are given every opportunity to enhance their skills. The transformation programme appears to be working to this aspiration.

"The childcare and early education workforce must be given proper resourses and as a mother myself I understand this demand. With a shartfall in registered childminders, full time parents and comparitively better development grants and initiatives in the 26 counties, the six county Assembly must establish a transformation fund which sets out clearly what is available and provides incentive to improve."
