An additional 4 Temporary Speech and Language Therapists for Strabane District

26 June, 2007

The local MLA said,

"At the end of March the number of people awaiting an initial assessment by Speech & Language Therapy Service in Strabane District was 50, the number of people awaiting therapy was 117, with just 97 people having being fully assessed and undergoing therapy.

"To co-incide with the debate about Speech and language Therapy in the Assembly on 5 June I submitted a written question to the Health Minister Michael Mc Gimpsey asking him to outline what steps are being taken to tackle the waiting lists for such provision in the Strabane District Council area.

"In response, he said that he stated that there are 28 whole-time equivalent Speech and Language Therapists and 4 whole-time equivalent Technical Instructors employed within the former Foyle Trust area of Derry, Limavady and Strabane.

However, in order to address the specific waiting times in the Strabane District Council Area, a further 4 temporary Speech and language Therapists had been engaged with the waiting lists being addressed beginning with those who have had to wait the longest being dealt with first.

I welcome this long overdue intervention to deal with the waiting lists in Strabane District. ENDS
