Sinn Féin to accompany Garvaghy Road Residents to Parades meeting

26 June, 2007

Mr O'Dowd said:

"In recent weeks there has been much spin emerging from various groups, including the Parades Commission, regarding ongoing attempts by the Orange Order to march down Garvaghy Road. The Residents Coalition has today invited myself along with representatives from other parties to accompany them to today's meeting with the Parades Commission as observers.

"Despite all of the spin the situation in Portadown has not changed. The nationalist residents of Garvaghy Road do not want a sectarian parade coming through their community. We support them in their stance. The Orange Order have never entered into direct dialogue with the nationalist community in Portadown over this parade." ENDS

Editors Note: The meeting will take place at the Parades Commission offices in Windsor House at 1.30pm today.
