Sinn Féin to show support for Samaritans 24-7 campaign
"The Samaritans provide invaluable help and support to those in need and, as elected representatives, I believe a cross party show of support is required
"Samaritans volunteers recieve calls 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year. It has been recorded that Samaritans phone lines are busiest between 10.00p.m and 2.00a.m in the morning and they state that they have received calls from people as young as six and as old as 90 in the course of its 53 year-old history.
"In my own constituency the tragedy of suicide has rocked the area with the deaths in Craigavon of three young men. I shall be attending this worthwhile campaign launch along with other Sinn Féin Assembly members and I wish this campaign every success.
"Ireland has the second highest incidence of suicide in Europe. More than 500 people die each year and more than 10,000 people present at A&E due to self harm. It is one of the biggest causes of death of young people in the country. Previous direct rule ministers and 26 county governments have completely failed to deal with this crisis and the result is that for many people who are at risk and their families, there is not enough help available."
