New DART line must form part of fully integrated public transport network – Ó Snodaigh

28 June, 2007

Speaking today Dublin Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh welcomed plans for a €1.3billion high capacity DART inter-connector for Dublin and expressed hope that this extension of the DART service will take a substantial amount of private cars off the road.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "I would hope that this grand announcement by Iarnród Éireann will be complemented with a wider plan to transform Dublin from a city that is massively over-dependent on private cars into one in which accessible, affordable, fast and cheap public transport provides a viable alternative to commuters.

"Dublin's current transport system is farcical in that it is not connected. If this project is to be a success it must form part of a fully integrated public transport network. There also needs to be extensive public consultation regarding this project and this must start now so that we can get this project off the ground as soon as possible.

"Hopefully this plan will assist social inclusion and improve the lives of long suffering commuters, who, due to successive government's lack of investment and haphazard planning, are forced to endure traffic chaos on a daily basis." ENDS
