Sinn Féin comment on new Secretary of State

28 June, 2007

"Shaun Woodward as a former NIO Minister will clearly have some knowledge of the tasks involved in his new position. He needs to follow through on the committments made by the British Government since the Good Friday Agreement and in particiaulr during the St. Andrews talks late last year.

"Sinn Fein will be seeking an early meeting with the new British Secretary of State to discuss this and other matters including urgent progress on the deliverery of a significant economic package for the new Executive.

"Clearly we want to move to a position where the presence of a British Secretary of State here becomes unnecessary. In the interim we expect the new incumbent to build upon the progress we have secured in recent months and continue to work alongside the Irish government and all of the parties in ensuring that all outstanding matters are dealt with."
