Gorse Fires call-outs costing over £730,000-Brady

28 June, 2007

He said,

"Figures released puts the overall costs of dealing with gorse fires for 2006/07 at £730,038. The figures released also show that the Southern area, which includes Newry, makes up over 45% of the total call outs." said Mr Brady

"Not only is this severely damaging our environment and landscape but more importantly the attendance at gorse fires is tying up Officers and appliances whose immediate presence at other life threatening emergencies is required."

"A considerable amount of the gorse fires had been started deliberately. "

"I would urge people to be careful at all times when using fires in woodland and gorse areas as accidents can happen, but those who are engaged in deliberately setting fires to such areas are endangering lives and property"
