Ferris criticises compensation for salmon fishermen
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD, is has raised the issue of the compensation scheme for drift net fishermen in the Dáil today. Deputy Ferrus attempted to have the House adjourned in order to debate the issue.
Deputy Ferris said, "I have expressed my opposition to the compulsory buying out of drift net licenses in the past and both the inadequate compensation being offered and the conditions attached confirm that this is a bad deal for the people involved.
"Not only is the amount of money being offered a poor compensation for ending someone's livelihood but fishermen are also being forced to destroy their nets in order to qualify. This is unacceptable given that the type of nets can be used for other forms of fishing which remain viable. I would therefore call on the Minister to revise the terms of the compensation package in order to address these shortcomings." ENDS
