McDonald welcomes new Quick Bus Corridor
Speaking this morning Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald welcomed Dublin City Councils decision to bring a new Quality Bus Corridor into operation on the north quay.
Ms. McDonald said, "It is imperative that more Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) be introduced to radically transform Dublin City into one of widespread public transport use from its current over dependence on the private car. Existing QBCs must also be utilised to their full capacity and therefore I echo my party's previous call for the introduction of 500 extra buses for Bus Átha Cliath. It is scandalous that the full compliment of 100 additional public buses sanctioned by the Government have still not come on stream. Instead of the Department of Transport issuing licences to private companies to increase their services, they should be pumping money into public transport to cater for the huge demand that is already out there.
"It is estimated that this new QBC will shave 15 minutes off bus journey times at peak times, resulting in an improvement for those commuters choosing and relying on public transport. The current situation of extreme car ownership and usage in Dublin is unsustainable, environmentally, socially and economically. A significant number of Dublin's workforce currently spend 2 hours travelling to and from work; drastically reducing the amount of time they spend in traffic will increase the amount of quality time they can spend with their family and friends. Substantial investment in public transport can pay massive dividends improving people's quality of life. Public transport can provide the alternative to daily traffic chaos and stressful gridlock."
