Future of An Post in the balance - McDonald

11 July, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald today expressed concern for the future of An Post after the European Parliament backed an EU Commission plan to open the letters market to competition.

Ms Mc Donald dismissed any delay in the opening-up of the market as essentially irrelevant. Speaking from Strasbourg after the vote Ms McDonald commented:

"The experiences of Sweden and Britain show us that liberalising the postal market completely is a dangerous move. The Royal Mail dispute in the north is a direct result of the failed policy of privatisation. Older people and the marginalised rely on a universal postal service. For An Post workers and their families too, this move will bring many questions. The Irish government must learn from the mistakes of others and state immediately how it will guarantee the future of An Post workers and of a nationwide postal system accessible for all."CRÍOCH
