Mark Durkan misleads people of Derry

11 July, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has accused local MP Mark Durkan of deliberately misleading the Derry public over replies from Department of Education dealing with the Meanscoil Coláiste Bhride.

Mr McCartney said,

"I am angry that Mark Durkan MP continues to state that he is yet to receive a reply from the Department of Education dealing with the Meanscoil Coláiste Bhríde when at a meeting I attended at the end of June in St Brigid's School Carnhill Councillor Mark H Durkan produced a letter that he claimed was a reply from the Department of Education addressed to the local MP.

"Councillor Mark H Durkan produced a letter and stated that it was a reply from the Department of Education to Mark Durkan MP and offered to photocopy it for the parents attending the meeting. Either the letter that Mark H Durkan produced was bogus or Mark Durkan is deliberately misleading the public or worse still does not know what is going on in his office.

"As a local MLA and parent of a child looking to attend the Meanscoil in September I can only say that I am disappointed that Mark Durkan is more determined to make petty political politics out of the issues facing the Meanscoil rather than addressing them. I have been in contact with the Department of Education concerning the issue and have been assured that the matter is being investigated.
