De Brún: EU must do more to help poorest nations deal with Climate Change

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre De Brún today demanded action from the EU to help countries in the developing world respond to the threat of climate change.

Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, she said

"The time for action is now; the focus is shifting away from doubts as to the existence of Climate Change, towards managing its impact across the world and in particular in developing countries. Europe must transfer clean technologies to poorer nations and provide financial support for their implementation."

Exchanging views with the European Commission yesterday afternoon, Ms De Brún pressed the need to provide specific measures for Africa and the Indian subcontinent, which stand to be among the worse affected by Climate Change.

"Given that the impact of Climate Change will be disproportionately borne by the poorer countries, it is our responsibility to ensure that we do all in our power to help them cope."
