Sinn Féin welcomes PSNI domestic violence campaign

18 July, 2007

Sinn Féin Women's Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has welcomed the new PSNI media campaign to encourage more victims of domestic violence to come forward.

However, Ms McCann added that far reaching improvements right across the policing and judicial structures in dealing with domestic violence cases and particularly in conviction rates and sentencing are needed.

Ms McCann said:

"While the new domestic violence media campaign is welcome what is required are more far reaching changes in how we deal with the entire issue of domestic violence.

"We need proper support for victims from help lines, to refuges and counseling and we need a policing response that is both sensitive to the needs to victims and focused on securing convictions and ensuring the safety of those who leave violent relationships.

"It is also clear that the in many many cases people feel that they are let down by the judicial service.

"Not only the conviction rates very low in domestic violence cases but at times there is almost a sense of betrayal because of the short sentences handed down to perpetrators of domestic violence." ENDS
