Sinn Féin back farmer’s concerns over Brazilian beef

19 July, 2007

Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson Gerry McHugh MLA has supported the concerns raised by farmers over the importation of Brazilian beef into Ireland.

Mr McHugh said:

"The importation of Brazilian beef into not just the Irish market but the EU has been very damaging to the local industry.

"Beef produced here is of the highest quality and has to meet a number of stringent guidelines particularly in terms of traceability. Maintaining these standards comes at a cost to the farmer.

"Yet because beef imported from Brazil does not have to meet these same rigorous standards they are able to undercut local producers considerably. This is clearly unfair and puts our local farmers at a disadvantage." ENDS
