Sinn Féin to meet Newry PSNI

23 July, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Armagh MP Conor Murphy will lead a Sinn Féin delegation which will be meeting with PSNI in Newry on Wednesday, July 25th, to discuss policing responses to tackling the growing anti-social violence and criminality in the Crossmaglen and general south Armagh area.

Mr Murphy said:

"It is essential that communities get the policing service that they are entitled to. I believe that a critical engagement between republican communities and the PSNI can help bring this about and this is the first stage of such critical engagements.

"This initiative is aimed at ensuring that anti-social behaviour in the area is effectively tackled. Only a tiny number of people are engaged in this totally unacceptable activity. The vast majority of citizens in this area are law abiding and responsible people who are determined to see an end to this type of behaviour.

"Sinn Féin wanted to see the local community and criminal justice agencies, especially the PSNI, working together to ensure that people could live in peace and safety, free from intimidation, threat or violence." ENDS
