MEP Delegation to Visit North West

25 July, 2007

Sinn Fein Cllr Maeve Mc Laughlin has welcomed the decision by a number of MEPs to visit the North West of Ireland in September.

Cllr McLaughlin said:

"This is an important boost for the North West Region and an opportunity for us to advance the needs and aspirations of the Region. I am aware that party colleague Bairbre de Búun MEP has been lobbying for some time to secure a visit to the North West of Ireland and I am pleased that this visit has now been confirmed.

"As a member of the North West Region Cross Border Group It is important that a united voice is presented from Donegal Derry, Strabane, Limavady and Magherfelt.

"At a time when we are preparing for the new territorial cooperation/ Interrreg measure it is a welcome opportunity to place our wish list for the region directly to these MEPs.

"This is a real opportunity to ensure pressure on both the Irish and British Governments to ensure delivery of their commitments under the North West Gateway Initiative. Both Governments announced this initiative in December 2005 and as of yet we have not seen one penny released for infrastructural development. This is real opportunity to bring pressure to bear on both governments from a European level." ENDS
