Derry Hoax devices

25 July, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said that the hoax devices in Derry caused only hardship to the local population and businesses.

Ms Anderson said:

"The disruption caused by the hoax devices served no purpose other that to disrupt the lives of the local population and tarnish the name of the city in the eyes of tourists.

"To deal with these hoax devices the PSNI had to close several roads and evacuate residents of a local hotel in the early hours of the morning. The local businesses in this area have also lost trading hours and the image of the city has been tarnished in terms of attracting tourists.

"This sort of activity does nothing for this community and is an attack on the ongoing peace process which is supported by the overwhelming number of people on this island.

"If these hoax attacks were in response to the planned meeting by Hugh Orde organised by the Féile then it is obvious that the people behind them are out of touch as that meeting had already been postponed.

"They are also out of touch with the will of the vast majority of the people of Derry who have indicated that they want to move forward without this type of disruption." ENDS
