Bill of Rights – opportunity to set new standards

26 July, 2007

Sinn Féin Human Rights and Equality Spokesperson Foyle MLA Martina Anderson, who is one of the party representatives on the Bill of Rights Forum, has said that the forum is now getting down to work of the detail on new legislation and that this is an opportunity to set new standards. Ms Anderson also called on people from all sections of society to get involved.

Ms Anderson said:

"The Forum provides an opportunity to reach across and into the communities at grass-roots level. We need to popularise this issue, build consensus and develop outreach mechanisms so that there is widespread involvement in shaping a new Bill of Rights.

"We can set new standards in defining people's rights - not just in terms of fundamental human rights but also for specific groups and on socio-economic issues like the right to housing.

"Sinn Féin wants to see a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights that is enforceable.

"A Bill of Rights has the potential to transform our society and provide the framework for the broadest protection of the rights of everyone. We need the widest possible participation in developing this legislation because it will be all the stronger when there is genuine ownership of the principles that will underpin the Bill of Rights."
