Sinn Féin organise campout to oppose DSD plans for Andersonstown Barracks

2 August, 2007

Sinn Féin are to step up their campaign against the proposed plans for the development of the Andersonstown Barracks site in West Belfast after announcing details of an overnight campout at the site of the former barracks starting at 1pm on Saturday August 4th.

Speaking after the announcement local councillor Michael Brown said:

"There is widespread anger at the way the development of this site has been dealt with. The consultation process was seriously flawed and did not properly engage with the local community and local elected representatives. The proposals published by the developer do not command community support.

"Sinn Féin has said to the department that the site should be gift-aided to the local community for local use. We still maintain that the Minister, Margaret Ritchie should give the land back to the local community.

"The Andersonstown Barracks site is a landmark in west Belfast. Any development must reflect this, the history of the site and the needs of local residents. Sinn Féin are determined that in developing this site that we achieve the maximum potential benefit to the local community." ENDS
