Local communities must drive campaign against drugs

2 August, 2007

Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has said that local communities need to be at the heart of work to rid Ballymena of its drugs problem.

Mr. McKay said;

"The second tragic death in 48 hours of a young man in Ballymena highlights how drugs are ruining the lives of young men and women throughout North Antrim.

"This scourge effects all of society regardless of religious belief or political persuasion. Tackling this requires unity of purpose and unity of action.

"Sinn Féin believes that a representative forum should be set up in Ballymena to deal with this problem in conjunction with the PSNI, the justice system and other statutory agencies. Political representatives, community groups, churches, sporting organisations and other groups who are affected by drugs can and should be at the forefront of this.

"It is worth remembering that drug-dealing and drug-usage is directly responsible for other forms of crime here such as anti-social behaviour and theft.

"I am calling for a representative public meeting to address all of this." ENDS
