Farming Minister welcomes EU decision on Exports

6 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Farming Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA, has welcomed the decision from Europe that farmers in the North can continue to trade livestock and meat throughout Europe and Ireland.

The Minister explained further:

"I have already ensured that trade throughout the island of Ireland continues freely. The EU decision now means that farmers here can also trade throughout Europe and this is welcome.

"We will have to introduce extra certification and we are in dialogue with our counterparts in Dublin about how we can keep this to the minimum to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy and cost.

"I am grateful for the continued support from our counterparts in Britain and the South for recognising our unique position. The decision will be discussed at a meeting of Commission officials later this week and we will take the opportunity to press for further easement."

Earlier today the Minister briefed the Assembly Agriculture Committee, the industry and the First Minister and Junior Minister Gerry Kelly on the latest position.

The Minister said:

"I am grateful for the continued support of Executive colleagues, committee members and the industry in managing the ongoing situation." ENDS
