Jailing of Joe Higgins TD and Cllr. Claire Daly "outrageous" – Ó Caoláin
Minister Cullen is responsible
Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described as "outrageous" the jailing of Joe Higgins TD and Councillor Claire Daly. Deputy Ó Caoláin said:
"The jailing of these two elected representatives for a month for protesting against refuse charges is absolutely outrageous. This arises directly out of the mess the Fianna Fáil/PD government has made of the entire waste management issue.
"Environment and Local Government Minister Martin Cullen has stripped local authority members of their powers with regard to waste management. He has equipped city and county managers with the dictatorial power to impose these charges without a vote of the elected members of councils. Sinn Féin vehemently opposed this legislation in the Dáil. Our colleagues in Dublin are active in the campaign against the charges.
"Minister Cullen is responsible for taxation without representation and has made resistance to the refuse charges inevitable. He and his Government colleagues must now urgently revisit their entire waste management policy." ENDS
