Sectarian attack on couple in Donegal registered car at Downhill Beach

9 August, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has called for vigilance after a young couple was attacked by a sectarian mob at Downhill Beach in County Derry.

Ms Anderson said:

"This couple underwent a horrific ordeal after a group of youths noticed that their vehicle had a Donegal registration plate.

"They were subjected to sectarian abuse and hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused to their car when it was attacked with bricks and an iron bar. As they fled the area, they were also chased by another car and feared that they could be run off the road.

"This was a blatant act of sectarian intimidation and I would commend the young couple who have asked me to raise this issue in order to warn others who may be travelling in Donegal-registered cars to exercise caution."

Ms Anderson has also taken a complaint to the Police Ombudsman on the couple's behalf after they criticised the PSNI investigation into the attack.
