10 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the news that following a meeting between Royal Mail and the Communications Workers Union (CWU) that the planned industrial action has been postponed in an effort to reach a resolution to the dispute.

Mr McCartney said

"I welcome the news that following a meeting between Royal Mail bosses Allan Leighton, Adam Crozier and Billy Hayes, General Secretary and Dave Ward Deputy General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) further planned industrial action has been suspended.

"Both parties have committed to talks on all the issues between them. The talks will be hosted and facilitated by the TUC and they have committed to try and reach an agreement by the 4th September. During the negotiations Royal Mail will not serve notice or take any unilateral action to impose changes by executive action and the CWU will suspend industrial action.

"Hopefully now with both sides getting into talks a resolution to this long running dispute can be found and agreement found around the issues of modernisation, protection of jobs and pay levels." ENDS
