Anderson condemns attack on Italian Students

13 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has said more needs to done to tackle racism and intolerance in the aftermath of an attack on visiting Italian students in the city centre.

Ms Anderson said

"I condemn the attack on the Italian students which took place in the city centre and express my sympathy to them, for what must have been a very traumatic experience. I hope they remain in the city and that they know that what happen to them is totally unrepresentative of the vast majority of its citizens.

"Everyone has a role to play in challenging racism, the number of reported racial incidents increases every year and yet these are only the tip of the iceberg.

"We live in increasingly diverse societies and the question of how we deal with this has been raised again and again, particularly in light of racist, xenophobic and sectarian attacks. Those who engage in racist abuse or promote racist attitudes help create the environment in which these racist attacks occur.

"We need to actively work for the removal of racism from our society. This requires action as much as words. It requires adequate resourcing and support for ethnic minority communities and their support groups. And it requires meaningful partnerships between all sections of society." ENDS
