Check entitlement to Winter Fuel Payment

28 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has appealed to anyone 60 or over to check if they are entitled for the Winter Fuel Payment during the qualifying week of 17-23 September 2007.

Ms Anderson said:

"I would urge anyone who is 60 or over to avail of the Winter Fuel Payment. People should be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment for the winter of 2007/08 if during the qualifying week of 17-23 September 2007 they are aged 60 or over and normally living in the North in that week.

"The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help people aged 60 and over with the costs of keeping warm this winter.

"If you are aged 60 to 79 and you are entitled to receive a Winter Fuel Payment, you will get either £100 or £200, depending on your circumstances in the qualifying week. If you are aged 80 or over and you are entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment, you will get an extra £50 or £100, so you could get up to £300, depending on your circumstances in the qualifying week. You do not pay tax on Winter Fuel Payments.

"Anyone needing to make a new claim for a payment for winter 2007/08, should return their claim forms by 30 March 2008." ENDS
