POCVA Child Protection Check delays causing major concern

28 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Mourne Fews area Councillor Turlough Murphy has said that delays in processing POCVA Child Protection Checks are causing major problems to employers and potential employees.

The Sinn Féin Councillor was commenting after a local Child Care Centre that was experiencing difficulties because of the delay in responding to their POCVA applications raised the issue with him.

Cllr Murphy said:

"Whilst we all acknowledge the essential need for stringent Child Care Checks for potential employees working with children, delays of over three months are being experienced. This effectively could result in childcare centres being left without staff and thus having to close until all checks are ratified.

"Enquires into this with the agencies involved show that there is a backlog of applications waiting to be processed. What is needed is more resources to help clear those backlogs." ENDS
