Sinn Féin oppose south Belfast stadium

29 August, 2007

Sinn Féin South Belfast Councillor, Alex Maskey MLA has said that the party's 14 councillors on Belfast City Council will oppose any plans to build a stadium in the Ormeau Park in south Belfast because of objections from local residents.

Sinn Féin also called on other political parties to join them.

The former Belfast City mayor, Alex Maskey said residents near Ormeau Park were understandably concerned at the prospect of having a large stadium built there.

He said:

"There are particular concerns about the loss of green space as well as the knock-on effects that such as stadium would have, such as increased parking and traffic problems, and noise pollution.

"Added to this is the fact that there is not the infrastructure within the area to cope with such a project.

"Sinn Fein is on record as stating our support for local residents in opposing such a development." ENDS
