UVF Bannerettes and Flags Flown at Newry Loyalist band Parade

26 August, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Mourne Councillor Brendan Curran has said that the weekends Loyalist Band Parade had caused a great anger and concern amongst many residents of the Newry area.

Cllr Curran said:

"The closing down of a main road into the City for over four hours ensured that maximum inconvenience and traffic chaos and delays took place.

"The flying of UVF Bannerettes and Flags by several Bands was a very deliberate sectarian assault and intimidation on the nationalist residents of the area and a direct violation of the Parades Commission determination.

"I believe that this Parade has effectively set back community relations in the area." ENDS
